An order of mostly woody plants — nine families, some six thousand species — and, for its size, an unusually useful one. Much of what the world eats, burns for incense, or prizes for timber sits somewhere within it.

Its families are the Anacardiaceae (mango, cashew), Rutaceae (the citrus), Sapindaceae (maple, lychee), Burseraceae (frankincense and myrrh), Simaroubaceae, Kirkiaceae, Biebersteiniaceae, Nitrariaceae, and the Meliaceae — the mahoganies, and the family in which Trichilia belongs.
